Matomo Analytics vs Google Analytics: Which Fits You?

Nemo · · 5 min read

Matomo analytics is an open source web analytics platform with Google Analytics-style reports, free to self-host or hosted on Matomo Cloud from 29 a month. The main difference from Google Analytics is ownership: with Matomo the data stays on your server or in Matomo’s cloud instead of Google’s. Pick Matomo if you want GA-style goals, segments and ecommerce reports without sending data to Google. Pick Google Analytics 4 if you live in Google Ads. Pick a lighter tool if you only check a handful of numbers.

This comparison covers price, hosting, privacy and reports, with facts from Matomo’s pricing page, Matomo’s cookie FAQ and Google’s retention help page, checked in October 2026.

What is Matomo analytics?

Matomo is a web analytics platform, open source and available two ways:

  • Matomo On-Premise: you download it and run it on your own server. The Community edition is free forever, with unlimited users and hits, and support through the forum.
  • Matomo Cloud: Matomo hosts it for you. The lowest tier is listed at 29 a month for 50,000 hits, with yearly billing including 2 months free. The pricing page doesn’t show the currency next to that figure, so check it for your region.

It covers what most teams use Google Analytics for: visitors, sources, campaigns, goals, ecommerce, segments, custom reports. Extras like heatmaps and session recordings are sold as a yearly plugin subscription for On-Premise and offered on Cloud within your plan’s quota.

Is Matomo better than Google Analytics for privacy?

Usually, yes, because you control where the data lives. With On-Premise, visitor data never leaves your server.

Cookies are a separate question. Matomo sets cookies by default. You can turn them off with one line in the tracking code (_paq.push(['disableCookies'])) or a setting for all sites. Matomo’s own FAQ is careful here: disabling cookies doesn’t stop tracking, and in most European countries the ePrivacy rules can still require consent for JavaScript tracking unless an exemption applies. Some regulators, such as France’s CNIL, exempt audience measurement that meets strict conditions.

Google Analytics 4 sets cookies and typically needs consent in the EU. Our guide to Google Analytics and GDPR explains why, and what is cookieless tracking? covers how other tools avoid cookies entirely.

Which is cheaper, Matomo or Google Analytics?

On paper, both can cost nothing. In practice:

  • GA4 costs $0 but asks for setup time, a consent banner and acceptance of Google’s terms. See is Google Analytics free?
  • Matomo On-Premise costs $0 in licenses but needs a server, a database, updates and backups. For a developer who already runs a VPS, that is an afternoon. For everyone else it is a recurring chore.
  • Matomo Cloud removes the server work for a monthly fee based on hits.

If you run several small apps, compare how each tool counts usage: Matomo Cloud prices by hits, while hosted tools like Fathom and Indiehacker Studio price by pageviews across all your sites.

When should you pick Matomo?

Matomo is a good fit when:

  1. You want Google Analytics depth (goals, ecommerce, segments) without Google.
  2. You need data to stay on your own infrastructure for legal or client reasons.
  3. You have someone who is happy to maintain a PHP app and a MySQL database.
  4. You want to keep years of raw data without paying for 360.

When is a lighter tool a better fit?

Most indie products use a small part of what Matomo or GA4 can do. If your daily check is “how many visitors, from where, and did they sign up”, a lightweight cookieless tool is faster to read and needs no upkeep. The Google Analytics alternative list compares six of them, and free website analytics covers the free tiers.

Indiehacker Studio is one of those lighter tools, built for founders with several apps. One script gives you cookieless analytics (live visitors, pages, referrers, UTM campaigns, countries, devices, custom events) with no IP stored, a chat bubble for support and bug reports, and Stripe MRR per project. It does not have Matomo’s goals, funnels or heatmaps; it trades depth for one screen per app and one inbox for all of them. Read running several side projects from one dashboard for how that works day to day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matomo really free?

Matomo On-Premise (Community edition) is free with unlimited hits, but you pay for the server and your time. Premium plugins, like heatmaps and session recordings, cost extra. Matomo Cloud is paid.

Can Matomo import Google Analytics data?

Matomo offers a Google Analytics importer plugin for moving historical reports. Check Matomo’s documentation for what it supports in your version before you rely on it.

Is Matomo GDPR compliant?

Matomo can be configured for GDPR compliance, and it gives you settings for IP anonymization, cookies and consent. Compliance depends on how you configure it and on the rest of your site, so check with your advisor.

Does Matomo slow down my website?

Like any analytics script, it adds a request. A self-hosted Matomo on a slow server can respond slowly; the tracking script loads asynchronously, so it should not block your page from rendering.

What did Matomo used to be called?

Matomo was previously called Piwik. Older guides and plugins may still use that name.
